A Longing for Peace

Sunday, December 8

I recently returned from a family trip (not a vacation, there's a difference!), where I had lots of opportunities to experience some peace. Often, that peace involved just sitting and reading, with no internet access, no meetings, no fires to put out, etc. After seven days, we were back home and back to the grind.

That's the nature of peace. It can be so evasive, so seasonal, so circumstantial. Peace is a wonderful thing to experience and when you're living in it, you don't want to it to end. The reality is, the grind seems to always be waiting for us.

In Isaiah 11, Isaiah has been in the grind for forty years. The Jews have been in a constant state of fighting, primarily between the Assyrians and the Egyptians. Isaiah has grown up in this, not knowing anything but kill or be killed. As you read Isaiah, you see this longing for a Messiah - someone who was going to usher in a kingdom of peace.

It's hard for us to imagine living like Isaiah did, but I think each of us can relate to his desire for peace. Though we don't have total control over everything that happens to us, we can choose to live in the peace of knowing that the Messiah has come - and will come again.

How do we fill the longing for peace? How do we live in peace when we seem to have so little control. The answers might surprise you. I hope to see you this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:45 am as we celebrate the 2nd Sunday of Advent.
