Has No One Condemned You?

Sunday, October 20

Warning! Loaded question ahead...

Thinking back, what action would you say has brought the greatest shame in your life? Your answer might be known to others, or you may have worked really hard to conceal what happened. Chances are, we all have things that we're ashamed of and would prefer others not knowing about.

When our actions bring shame, that shame is usually accompanied by condemnation and judgment. We condemn ourselves and we can also experience condemnation from others. For some, that judgment and shame is so severe that they sever relationships or choose to end their own life (remember Judas?).

In John 8, a woman who was caught in adultery is brought to Jesus. The religious leaders of the day were hoping to catch Jesus in a trap and were using this woman as bait. If you put yourself in the woman's shoes for a moment, what would you be feeling? In biblical times, adultery was punishable by death. Aside from that punishment, could you imagine the shame and guilt she was feeling?

Jesus' engagement with the religious leaders ultimately leads to this woman and Jesus being alone. The experience wraps up with Jesus asking this woman: has no one condemned you?

As you read the New Testament, it's clear that Jesus is the only One who can condemn. His question to this woman is also a question to us. I hope you'll join me this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:45 am as we continue our series - The Questions Jesus Asked.
