Abide:
Finding Comfort in Jesus

Sunday, March 23

I love collecting quotes. Before we had children, each night, I would send a quote with a little commentary to the staff at the hospital. I thought it was a good way for them to begin their day, opening up their email and reading something inspirational. Three kids later, I'm not quite able to keep up that pace.

One of the quotes that has stayed with me all these years was by A.A. Milne (Winne the Pooh): Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind. "Pooh!" he whispered. "Yes, Piglet?" "Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's paw. "I just wanted to be sure of you.”

There is something comforting about knowing that someone is with us. Whether it's a hospital bedside, navigating a tough season in life or staying close to your kids when they're afraid, tough times seem a little easier when someone is with us.

In John 14, we read about one such time. Jesus is sharing with the disciples that He is going to be going away. At this point, the disciples have become close to Jesus and are likely finding it difficult to imagine life without Him. Jesus utters these famous words, "Don't let your hearts be troubled..." He goes on to tell them that He is preparing a place for them and that He will return to take them to be with Him.

I believe Jesus understood that they (and us) need comfort. And I believe that Jesus knows that true comfort comes when we believe that He's with us. Each of us have, are or will walk through difficult times. We will either navigate those times with Jesus because we're abiding in Him, or we'll navigate those times without Him.

Like Piglet, I want to be sure of Jesus. And like Piglet, I want to know that Jesus' hand is there. How can I know that? I hope you'll join me this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:45 am as we continue our teaching series by exploring how comfort comes when we abide in Jesus.

March Ministry Spotlight: Christian Veterinary Mission

CVM is a non-profit organization that uses veterinary care to reach underdeveloped communities with the love of Christ by caring for their animals. For most of these communities, their livestock plays a central role in their livelihood. By providing care to these communities, CVM is able to build relationships with people and ultimately share the Gospel.

Short-Term Missions

CVM sends teams of veterinary professionals and students on short-term trips year-round to use their veterinary skills for God’s glory. Whether it is by performing spays and neuters, leading devotions with a team, or performing vaccinations, short-term volunteers are able to help others learn how to take care of their animals and share Christ’s love.

Long-Term Missions

CVM has been sending veterinary professionals and their families to serve long-term around the world since 1981. From rural community development to training among the nation’s most educated at university veterinary schools, CVM staff use their skills to train others how to be better stewards of the animals God has given them and spread the gospel.
