Back to the Future

Sunday, July 14

Last Sunday, we likened the spiritual life to a roller coaster. We experience spiritual highs and spiritual lows. It's seldom that a believer's life is an upward, linear trajectory towards God. It often zigs and zags, rises and falls. If that's true for individuals, it's certainly true for communities and nations.

As we studied Joshua 8 last week, we talked about how we rise after a spiritual failure. Rising after a spiritual failure has two important steps: turning to the Lord and being obedient. Like the father of the prodigal son, God is always ready to welcome us back and restore us.

This week, we're diving in to Joshua 9. Following the victory at Ai, Joshua and the Israelites are experiencing a spiritual high. Before they encounter more inhabitants in the Promise Land, a group known as the Gibeonites approach Joshua and the Israelites. As a way to protect themselves, the Gibeonites lie to Joshua.

According to chapter 8, the Israelites don't inquire of the Lord before coming to an agreement with the Gibeonites. The decision to enter into a treaty with the Gibeonites had lasting consequences. In terms of spiritual highs followed by a spiritual lows, it definitely seems like a "back to the future" kind of situation for the Israelites.

I don't know about you, but I can relate. Courageous faith isn't just forging ahead and trusting that God will work it out. Courageous faith is inquiring of the Lord and following His leading in our lives.

I hope you'll join me this Sunday at 9:00 or 10:45 am!
